Hey Product Hunt community, I'm Joel, creator of Breakdown.
After 20 years of "Is it the Network?", I built Breakdown to get instant answers in my Mac menubar. No more being on a choppy video call and wondering if it’s my Wi-Fi, my ISP, or Zoom . No more running traceroute or MTR and being frustrated by an intermittent issue that’s already resolved.

Before I started building Breakdown 8 months ago, I looked at the market landscape for a solution. Other offerings are either:
• Not lightweight
• Don’t adapt to the apps you use, or
• Require lots of manual diagnosis
I wanted something that:
• I can keep always-on without impacting my laptop battery
• Doesn’t rely on hard-coded monitoring targets, and
• Can quickly tell me where outages are along the network path.
Breakdown solves those problems. It:
• Uses less than 1% of CPU on a typical Mac
• Constantly detects and monitors the apps you're using in real-time
• Tells you exactly where issues are happening.
That means if you're on a Zoom call it will be monitoring and segmenting your LAN, the Zoom server you're connecting to, and the Internet path in between, all without you doing anything.
Once a problem is detected, you can then dive in at whatever level you prefer. With a couple of clicks you can get a detailed AI breakdown of the issue, and a PDF evidence report to send to support. For experts, Pro mode is like having a full network observability platform built in to your Mac.
