Two months ago: While reading a book, I came across a few words that were new to me. I opened Google to check the meanings of those words, but I realized that I had done this multiple times before and had forgotten the words I had previously looked up. So, I did some research and found an app called Anki, which helps create flashcards for remembering things. However, I found it painful to create flashcards by constantly switching to another app. So, I decided to create a simple e-reader app that would instantly create flashcards, and using spaced repetition technology, it would ask me to review the words to help me remember what I read. Last week of April: I built a modern and beautiful e-reader app with all the basic features and added an auto flashcard review feature, TTS, auto-sync across devices, stats, notifications, reminders, etc. Mid May: I asked my friend (who is a bookworm) to have a look at it. She loved the app, especially the flashcards feature, and asked me if it was available on the Play Store. So, I decided to launch it on the Play Store. She gave me a very unique idea—she asked for reactions so that she could react to any sentence, apart from highlighting it with colors. I would say that was the best feature I added. She then came up with the logo and name for the app, and I bought the domain name and registered the app for publication on the Play Store. Play Store Review Period: While Bookxie was under review, I started thinking about what other features could bring value. I improved flashcard generation to make learning new words faster and more effective. I also added chapter summaries so readers could quickly revisit the key points of a chapter in just a few lines. Alongside that, I added a feature called "Ask Book," which allows readers to ask questions related to the book and receive answers based only on the content they have read so far, helping them explore the book without spoilers. For readers who prefer a traditional reading experience, these features can be disabled at any time. End of May: Bookxie became available for testing on the Play Store. I wanted to add productivity features, so I added widgets, including reading streaks, the currently reading book on the home screen, random quotes and reactions from books, and a quick widget to start flashcard reviews. At this point, Bookxie had become a productivity tool that helps users Read & Remember, which gave me another idea: a feature called "Timeline." Timeline shows every detail, from when a book was opened, to when a reaction was made, to when the book was completed. This led to another idea called "Memory Surfacing," which shows users relevant memories, similar to Google Photos, such as: "You reacted 🔥 to this on this day last year." I made a comment here on Reddit, and a few people were interested in testing Bookxie. I received some great feedback and suggestions, and based on that feedback, I added language support to the app. Now, Bookxie is available in various languages and also supports getting meanings and creating flashcards in different languages. Chapter summaries and Ask Book work either in the book's language or in the app's language (which defaults to your system language). With all these features, the reading experience is not compromised at all. You still get all the customization options available in other e-reader apps, along with smooth animations and a modern design. With that said, I would like to announce that Bookxie is now available on the Play Store in beta.
