The idea behind Blobz started with something small that I kept noticing.
Whenever you sign up for a new website, you get a default profile picture. Most of the time, it's a boring silhouette or a randomly picked avatar that you'll probably replace the moment you get the chance. And if you ever remove your profile picture, you're often given another random one, with no consistency at all.
I started wondering: what if your default avatar was actually fun enough to keep? Something unique to you, something that stays the same every time you come back, even without storing a single image.
That became Blobz.
Blobz generates playful, deterministic SVG avatars from something as simple as a name, email, or ID. The same input always gives you the same avatar, with billions of possible combinations and zero image storage.
We started with a React package, keeping it free and unlimited so developers could drop avatars straight into their apps. Then we built a CLI to make integrating ready-to-use shadcn components effortless. Finally, we added a hosted API for developers who want to generate avatars through simple URLs without managing the implementation themselves.
What started as a tiny thought about boring profile pictures has grown into a complete way to bring consistent, playful identities to applications.
The goal is simple: make default avatars feel less like placeholders and more like an identity worth keeping.
