Planning a multi-day hike means juggling three tools: a spreadsheet for pack weight, a map for the route, and forums to find out where you can legally sleep. Bivtrack does all three — and finds the campsites for you. Drop in a GPX track and it analyses the terrain along your route: slope, vegetation, water, exposure. You get ranked bivouac spots. Real terrain, computed — not scraped listings. Open elevation data, no paid API in the stack, so the core stays free. Built solo.
Hey Product Hunt 👋
I built Bivtrack because of one specific bad evening on the GR20 in Corsica. Late, tired, and the flat patch I'd picked off the map turned out to be a 20° slope covered in scrub. I slept badly and spent the next two days thinking about how avoidable that was — the information existed, it just wasn't anywhere useful.
So the core question became: can you compute a decent campsite from a GPX track and open elevation data? It turns out you mostly can. Slope, water proximity, vegetation and exposure get you a ranked shortlist that's right more often than my own guessing.
Two decisions I'd genuinely like pushback on:
1. Wild spots are private by default and can't be made public — only official campsites can. It's deliberate: publishing a hidden spot is the fastest way to destroy it. But it does make the social side thinner. Am I being precious about this?
2. No paid geo API anywhere in the stack, which keeps the core free forever but caps the precision. Would you trade some of that free-ness for better data?
I'm a solo developer, this isn't a company, and there's no roadmap I'm obligated to. So if something is broken or annoying, tell me plainly — I'd rather hear it here than not hear it.
Thanks for looking.
