Bite Insight actually came from something pretty personal.
I was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes a few years ago, and suddenly I was paying a lot more attention to what was actually in the food I was eating.
The problem was, food labels weren’t particularly helpful.
I could see the calories, carbs, sugar, fat and a massive list of ingredients, but what I really wanted to know was: is this food actually a good choice for me?
I tried different apps, but most seemed to give me even more nutritional data rather than helping me understand it. And they didn’t really know anything about me.
So I started designing Bite Insight.
The idea is really simple. Scan the barcode on a food and Bite Insight looks at it based on you, your health conditions, allergies and dietary preferences, and highlights the things you might actually want to know about.
What started as something I wanted for myself is now being used by hundreds of people, who’ve scanned thousands of products between them. That’s probably been the nicest part of all of this. Realising the problem I had wasn’t just my problem.
