Betty & Emyak
Offline English for kids — no ads, no accounts, no tracking
Betty & Emyak teaches children English through ten games, dozens of illustrated story books, every English tense, a grammar engine, idioms, real conversations and a complete pronunciation lab. Every spoken line is pre-recorded and shipped inside the app, so it still speaks on a device with no text-to-speech voice installed. Everything is there the moment you install. No ads, no accounts, no analytics. Windows today, one payment, no subscription.
Hi Product Hunt 👋
I built this for children learning English, and one constraint shaped everything: it has to work with no connection.
The games are where most of the learning actually happens. There are ten of them — an arcade shooter, air hockey, a match-three, a word hunt, three logic-puzzle games with 45 hand-built levels, quizzes — and in all of them English is how you play rather than a quiz between rounds. You beat the computer at air hockey by sending the right word into the goal. You fly a ship and shoot the word that matches the picture. The arcade games build their rounds from the word pool, so they do not run out.
The part that took longest was audio. Most learning apps read text with the device's text-to-speech — and a phone or PC set to a language with no voice pack installed simply plays nothing. The app is silent and the parent has no idea why. It is a common complaint on children's apps and it is invisible to the developer, because it never happens on the machine you build on. So every spoken line is rendered ahead of time and shipped inside the app: 1,827 audio files. That removed the entire class of "it stopped talking" bug reports.
The privacy part is the same idea — make it structural instead of promising it. There are no accounts, no ads and no analytics, and the Android build declares no INTERNET permission at all, so it is not that the app chooses not to phone home: it has no socket to do it with. Progress lives on the device.
Beyond the games it is a full course: dozens of illustrated story books, every English tense, a grammar engine, hundreds of words with pictures and meanings, idioms, real-life conversations, and a pronunciation lab covering the whole English sound system. Every single line of it is read aloud in a clear British voice. And all of it is on the device the moment you install — nothing streams, nothing drip-feeds, nothing unlocks later.
Honest about where it is: today this is the Windows version, one payment, no subscription. The Android version lands in a couple of weeks and iOS is in review. It is one HTML/JS bundle wrapped three ways.
I would genuinely like to hear what breaks and what is missing — especially from anyone teaching children, and from anyone whose kids are older than mine assume. Happy to go into any of the engineering too.
Here is exactly what the download includes — all of it on the device, none of it streaming:
• 10 games — arcade, logic puzzles and quizzes
• 45 hand-built puzzle levels and 15 sentence-building levels, and the arcade games draw endless rounds from the word pool, so they do not run out
