Today I'm releasing the iPad and MacOS version of Best Friend, a companion app for Teenage Engineering EP-series samplers (EP-133 K.O. II, EP-40 Riddim, and EP-1320 Medieval). It's an extended display and feature augmentation tool that lets you: - upload and manage files - fully edit and process samples - create backups for banks, projects, and the device - apply additional performance effects (like individual pad mutes) - and see all the device settings
Hi Product Hunt! I'm Brian Holt, the solo-dev who build Best Friend, a dedicated Teenage Engineering EP-133, EP-40, and EP-1320 companion app. Its primary purpose makes adding, editing, and processing samples on the hardware really easy and portable.
I use my KO-II weekly at jam with other musicians, so most of the features I've built stem from things I've needed to do regularly. For example:
- pre-process all my samples before loading them since the memory on the device is so limited (128MB). I worked on an open-source web tool called Re:Pitch that converts stereo samples to mono and pitches samples up an octave to cut the file size in half, but that still meant selecting samples and loading them in through the official desktop web app ahead of time. Now I can bulk import then independently crop, normalize, repitch, reduce the fidelity, and collapse stereo to mono all from my phone, keeping my file size very small.
- I pre-load all the pads I'll play with at the jam as "kits", but changing them requires a lot of time because the hardware doesn't have this concept. I manually maintained a spreadsheet with the slot numbers (where samples are saved) so I could swap my kits, but inevitably, the slots would go out of sync. I created a file format, .epbank, so Best Friend can load and swap kits in a single tap--slot independent.
- At a beat-making club I'm part of I used Koala Sampler to chop and split stems from the crate before loading them into the EP-133. Teenage Engineering released better chopping, but I incorporated stem splitting in Best Friend's audio editor to cut down on steps.
I've been a software engineer since 2012, was a UX and graphic designer before that, and have been playing music my entire life. This is the first product I've launched that really married all my experience, and it's felt unbelievably rewarding.
I'd love to hear feedback, EP workflows you use, or features you hope to see. Even included in this release are some features that came through requests: individual pad mutes and drag and drop pad rearrangement! And I'm happy to chat about processes, roadmaps, or whatever.
