I've always felt that working with databases was more complicated than it needed to be. Every project ended up with dozens of SQL files, multiple database connections, notes scattered across different tools, and countless browser tabs. SQL itself isn't the problem—the workflow around it is.
I wanted to build a tool that lets developers think visually. Instead of treating every query as an isolated script, I wanted them to become reusable building blocks that can be organized, connected, and understood inside an infinite canvas.
That's how the idea for BentoQL was born.
What problem were you trying to solve?
As databases grow, so does their complexity. Queries become harder to maintain, documentation gets out of sync, and understanding someone else's work—or even your own work from a few months ago—can be frustrating.
My goal was to create a workspace where everything related to a database lives together. SQL queries, documentation, notes, diagrams, and ideas shouldn't be spread across different applications. They should exist in a single visual environment that makes complex systems easier to understand and collaborate on.
How did your approach or process evolve while working on this launch?
At first, I thought I was building a better SQL editor.
As I continued working on it, I realized that writing SQL wasn't really the problem. Most database tools already do that well. The real challenge was helping developers organize their knowledge and understand complex database systems.
That completely changed the direction of the project. Instead of focusing on the editor, I focused on the workspace. The infinite canvas became the heart of BentoQL, where queries, documentation, diagrams, and reusable components all come together.
Today, I don't see BentoQL as just another SQL client. I see it as a visual workspace for modern database development.
Loving the canvas approach for organizing queries, it would be a huge help if you added native support for parameterized cards so I can reuse the same query logic across different datasets without duplicating everything.

The canvas idea is genuinely fresh for SQL work, and the card system looks like it could solve a lot of tab chaos. One thing that would make this a daily driver for me is a version history view per card, so I can see how a query evolved over time and roll back when something breaks.
The canvas idea actually clicked for me once I started connecting queries into a small workflow, way less tab juggling. Wish the card templates had a few more starter examples though.
Love the canvas idea, this would replace so many Notion pages and saved queries I have lying around. One thing that would make it stick for me is version control on the boards themselves, like being able to see diffs when I refactor a query or branch the canvas when exploring a new schema.
