Most self-tests hand you a number and stop. A number on its own means very little: 240 ms is either unremarkable or genuinely quick depending on whether you were on a mouse, a trackpad or a phone, and the page that gave you the figure usually doesn't say which.
BenchSelf is 19 browser tests built around the second half of that sentence. 17 of them end with a percentile, the device class it was computed within, and a plain statement of what the comparison population actually is.
The part I'd most like feedback on is the honesty plumbing. A new site has no population, so every ranked test ships a stated baseline curve, and the page says so next to the percentile instead of pretending otherwise. 3 of the 17 curves are fitted to figures someone else published (linked on the methodology page); the other 14 are our estimates and are labelled as estimates. Once a device class holds 5,000 real first attempts the baseline is dropped and the curve is entirely measured.
No account, no ads, no affiliate links, nothing to buy. The results database is not for sale and no third-party script is ever loaded into a test page - a test that pauses to fetch an ad measures the ad network's latency along with your reflexes.
