I built BearFox because I wanted to talk instead of type - but every voice-to-text tool I liked sent my voice off to someone's cloud. On a work PC, or for anything private, that's a non-starter.
So the goal became simple but stubborn: dictation that's genuinely good *and* never leaves your machine. Everything runs locally - the speech recognition, plus an optional AI clean-up that strips the 'ums', false starts and stray punctuation, so what lands on the page reads like you meant to write it.
The hardest part wasn't the transcription - it was making it work on real, locked-down office PCs: no admin rights, nothing to install, often no GPU and only 8GB of RAM. That constraint shaped everything. In the end I bundled every model inside the app, so it works the moment you open it: no setup, no account, no internet.
Along the way it grew from a scrappy push-to-talk script into a proper tray app - live dictation, file transcription, and GPU acceleration that quietly falls back to CPU when there isn't one.
