Backspace
Find what Docker, Xcode and your builds did to your disk
Backspace finds the disk space developer tools leave behind: Docker volumes, simulator runtimes, build caches, VM images. It ties each item to its project and says what removing it would actually free. The scan is free; one single payment unlocks removal.
Hi Product Hunt, I'm Dmitry, and this is the story why I built Backspace.
A while ago I was in a cafe, writing code for one of my mobile apps. No tests running, nothing building, nothing downloading. I noticed the MacBook had 10 GB free and thought: fine, that's enough for now.
An hour later macOS warned me there was 1 GB left. I hadn't started anything. I was still
trying to find what had eaten the space when it hit zero, and every service I had running
started to crash.
Backspace is the tool I wanted in that hour. It samples free space in the background,
warns you the moment something starts eating the disk, and attributes each drop to what actually changed.
For the space that is already gone, it asks the tools themselves: OrbStack, Docker
Desktop, Colima and Podman for where their disks live, simctl for which simulators exist
and which runtimes they need. It walks the disk for node_modules, target, Pods and the
rest, and works out which project each one belongs to.
On my own Mac the first scan found:
- 212 of 246 Docker volumes that belong to no project
- 16 simulators that can't start because their iOS runtime is gone
- 6.75 GB of build output in projects nobody has touched in six months
Two rules I didn't bend:
1. Honest numbers. Every size is allocated blocks, not apparent size, so a sparse VM image doesn't show up as 8 TB, and space shared through APFS clones isn't counted twice.
2. Nothing leaves your Mac. No analytics, no telemetry. The app talks to Lemon Squeezy for the licence and to our site for updates, and that's all.
The scan is free and shows everything. one single payment, no subscription, unlocks removal, background monitoring, alerts, history and an audit log of every command it ran.
I'd like to hear what it finds on your machine, and what it misses. Which tool leaves the
most behind on yours?

Who hunted Backspace?
Backspace was hunted by Dmitry Koubek. A “hunter” on Product Hunt is the community member who submits a product to the platform — uploading the images, the link, and tagging the makers behind it. Hunters typically write the first comment explaining why a product is worth attention, and their followers are notified the moment they post. Around 79% of featured launches on Product Hunt are self-hunted by their makers, but a well-known hunter still acts as a signal of quality to the rest of the community.
