I built Away: Focus Timer because I realized I was picking up my phone dozens of times a day without any reason. Instead of blocking apps or forcing productivity, Away simply replaces that moment with a quiet timer. Every time you reach for your phone, you pause and ask yourself: “Do I really need this right now?” It’s a small psychological shift that helped me use my phone less - and I hope it helps others too.
Hey everyone!
I’m Pawel, an indie iOS developer from Poland.
I built Away because I noticed something about myself: I wasn’t opening my phone for any real reason anymore. I’d pick it up dozens of times a day, unlock it, check nothing important, and lose a few more minutes.
I tried Pomodoro apps, app blockers and screen time limits, but they all felt like productivity tools or something I had to fight against.
So I built something much simpler.
Away is just a timer that starts when you decide to put your phone down. That’s it.
The interesting part is psychological: every time you instinctively reach for your phone, instead of seeing another app, you see how long you’ve already managed to stay away. It makes you pause for a second and ask yourself:
“Do I really need my phone right now?”
That tiny interruption completely changed my own habits.
I’ve been using Away every day for the last few weeks, and it’s honestly one of the few apps I’ve built that became part of my own routine.
I’d genuinely love your feedback:
- Does the idea make sense?
- What would make you use it every day?
- Anything that feels confusing or unnecessary?
Thank you for checking it out.

Who hunted Away?
Away was hunted by Paweł Chmiel. A “hunter” on Product Hunt is the community member who submits a product to the platform — uploading the images, the link, and tagging the makers behind it. Hunters typically write the first comment explaining why a product is worth attention, and their followers are notified the moment they post. Around 79% of featured launches on Product Hunt are self-hunted by their makers, but a well-known hunter still acts as a signal of quality to the rest of the community.
