Hi Product Hunt! 👋
I'm Junwoo, a nerdy CS undergraduate and the creator of Athens. I am incredibly thrilled (and a bit nervous!) to share my passion project with this amazing community today.
🖤 The Origin Story & Homage to Podiums
It all started because I fell in love with an iOS app called "Podiums", which lets you rank and share your favorite things through 1:1 matchups. It’s an amazing app, but as an Android and Web user, I was sad I couldn't use it everywhere.
So, I decided to build a music-focused version for myself as a fun side experiment. But as I kept coding, adding my own ideas and polishing the details, I ended up creating something much bigger and more refined than I ever expected. I knew I had to share it with the world.
🎧 Rating Should Be Effortless, Not a Chore
Most rating apps make you feel like a strict critic, forcing you to think hard about whether an album is a 3.5 or a 4.0. With Athens, I wanted rating to be a frictionless, lighthearted experience:
• Frictionless 1:1 Duels: Just tap between two tracks/albums (powered by ELO algorithm) while you walk down the street.
• Deep Taste Stats: Rather than just sorting reviews, Athens focuses on your music data. We analyze your library with deep genre & mood tags from Last.fm and MusicBrainz.
• Compare with Friends: You can compare your music taste with friends, see your compatibility percentage (e.g., “35% Match”), and read fun auto-generated relationship dynamic reports (like "The Anchor & The Eclectic Listener").
💸 Why We Aren't on the iOS App Store (Yet!)
Currently, Athens is available on the Web, Google Play Store, and as a direct macOS download. To be completely honest, as a broke college student, the annual $99 Apple Developer fee is a bit too steep for a fully free, open-source project with no ads. But if the community loves this app and we grow together, I hope to bring it to iOS soon!
Athens is built with a lot of love, sweat, and late-night coding sessions. I’d be honored to get your feedback, hear about your music matches, and answer any questions.
Thank you so much for your support, and happy dueling! 🎧🖤
