ARAS is an ARM64 Android virtualization system for Apple Silicon Macs, built to make Android apps feel at home on macOS. Run games, social apps, messaging apps, utilities, and apps that depend on Google Play Services, with support for controllers, keyboard and mouse, trackpad, Magic Mouse, and native-style input. Because Android apps commonly ship ARM64 builds and Apple Silicon is ARM64 too, ARAS can avoid some of the architecture translation required by x86 or Windows-based approaches.
I’ve been building ARAS, an Android Research ARM System for Apple Silicon Macs.
The original goal was not to build another gaming-only Android emulator. I wanted Android apps to feel much closer to normal Mac apps while still supporting the things people expect from a full Android environment.
ARAS currently supports Android apps and games, Google Play Store and Play Services, social and messaging apps, keyboard and mouse, controllers, trackpad and Magic Mouse input, and ARM64 hardware virtualization through macOS Hypervisor.framework.
Gaming is particularly interesting because many Android games already provide native ARM64 builds. Since Apple Silicon is ARM64 as well, ARAS can potentially reduce some of the CPU architecture translation overhead involved in running x86 software or Windows versions of the same games through additional compatibility layers.
We’ve been testing games such as Fortnite and Where Winds Meet alongside regular Android apps, including higher graphics settings where the Android version and graphics stack support them.
We also already have an iPhone integration that we’re preparing to release soon. It lets an iPhone act as an interface for Android running through ARAS on the Mac, including multitouch, gyro and motion input, microphone input, and other mobile controls. In practice, this means an iPhone can be used to interact with Android apps and games through ARAS, including experiences that rely heavily on touch and motion controls.
ARAS is still in beta, so this launch is also about finding people who are willing to test it, break it, report issues, and help shape where the project goes next. More testers across different Macs, apps, games, controllers, and input setups can help us find problems faster and improve development.
