Here's the deal: every email API we looked at was solving a 2015 problem with 2015 assumptions still baked in. You'd sign up, get a friendly free tier, and the pricing looked reasonable right up until you actually grew. Then the overage rates kicked in, or worse, some providers actually charge you *more* per email the bigger you get. I didn't want to build another vendor that looks cheap on the landing page and gets expensive the moment you succeed. I wanted to build the modern version, one that's actually affordable, not "affordable until you read the fine print."
That came down to two problems, tangled together. The first was economic: most transactional and broadcast email runs on marked-up cloud infrastructure, so you're paying for someone else's margin stack on top of the actual cost of sending an email. The second was developer experience: writing HTML emails is still table layouts and inline CSS hacks so Outlook doesn't break your padding, it's 2010-era web dev that never modernized. We wanted to fix the cost problem by running Anypost on bare-metal servers instead of rented cloud markup, and fix the dev experience problem by letting people write emails in Markdown instead of table soup.
The approach evolved as I went. It started as an infrastructure fix, strip out the cloud markup, pass the savings down, keep deliverability solid with proper DKIM/SPF and IP warming instead of hoping shared tenancy behaves. Once that foundation was solid, the developer experience gap became the obvious next problem, which is where emailmd came from, Markdown in, inbox-ready HTML out, no table hacks.
That's Anypost: bare-metal infrastructure for transactional and broadcast email, Markdown-native rendering, and AI-agent tooling built in from the start, at a fraction of what people are paying now.
