Hi, Product Hunt!
I’ve been building indie products for the past couple of years, and one challenge kept repeating — finding affordable or self-hosted alternatives to expensive tools that either didn’t support my country or were simply overkill for small teams.
Every time I started a new project, I’d lose hours searching for alternatives on Reddit, Twitter, or random blogs. Most “alternative” websites had outdated databases, poor UX, or irrelevant results.
That’s what inspired me to build AlterBase — a curated and community-driven directory where makers can find and share indie-friendly alternatives that actually work.
During the process, I realized this isn’t just a list problem but a discovery problem. So instead of automating everything, I focused on manual curation, clean design, and transparency — something that grows with the community rather than decaying over time.
Interesting project. It would be great to integrate AI to search for alternatives and fill the database with hundreds of thousands of projects in a short time, as well as categorize them by themes, geography, etc. For example, I need an alternative to Stripe for accepting payments in Asia. I’ve never processed payments there and have no idea which service to use. If you could answer such a question, that would be really cool!
Does it already have a chatbot which answers to our requirements and makes product recommendations?
much tools there is labeled as free
but when i checked the app is not free :(
Nice tool, congratz on the launch! I wish the search bar is a bit more prominent, I didn't see it at first.
Smooth experience overall, feels built for creators, founders, and teams who care about smart choices 🚀
Perfect for anyone tired of scrolling through endless reviews just to pick one decent tool.
Are the alternatives recommended found on the internet with AI or something? Or is it only going to recommand tools that opt in/join the website?
AlterBase fills an important niche! Finding good alternatives can be time-consuming. How do you keep your database current as new tools launch and existing ones evolve? Also, do you have any plans to add user ratings or reviews to help people choose?
Oh this is super useful 👏 I’m always jumping between tools trying to find the best one — especially when it comes to what they actually offer vs. the price 💸 And... Are you also planning to include data like user reviews or usage insights — for example, how many people keep using the tool vs. drop it over time? That kind of info would be gold. 🔍🙌
Love the look, but narrowing down by category, and compare to would be good - and then, how does this beat alternativeto ?
Congratulations on the launch! I've submitted my product. Excited to see how it goes
It would be pretty cool to browse it according to categories too :) E.g. crypto apps, language apps, accomodation booking services etc :)
