AISH is an open-source Linux shell built in Rust. It works like your normal terminal — run commands, ssh into servers, open vim, use top — everything through a real PTY. When you need help, type a leading semicolon and describe what you want in plain language. AISH generates the command, shows you a risk rating (low/medium/high), and waits for your OK before running anything dangerous. Apache-2.0. Bring your own model. All data stays local.
Hey PH — I'm one of the makers behind AISH.
Quick context: I spend most of my day in Linux terminals debugging production issues. The AI tools I tried either replaced my shell entirely (I don't want a chatbot) or felt like autocomplete with extra steps.
So I built AISH — it's a real Linux shell (full PTY, so vim/ssh/top all work normally). When I need AI help, I type ; followed by what I want in plain English:
; find all log files modified in the last hour sorted by size
; explain what this iptables rule does
; why is this process eating 90% CPU
AISH generates the command, rates it by risk (low/medium/high), and asks me to confirm before running anything above low. There's an optional sandbox mode for when I want to see what a command would change before it actually runs.
It's written in Rust, Apache-2.0 licensed, and all data stays on your machine. You bring your own model/provider credentials; AISH runs locally in your terminal.
I'd genuinely appreciate feedback on:
- Is the install experience smooth? (one-liner: curl -fsSL https://aishell.ai/repo/install.sh | bash)
- Does the risk grading make sense, or is it annoying?
- What's the first thing you'd want to try it on?

Who hunted AISH?
AISH was hunted by Abdul Alim. A “hunter” on Product Hunt is the community member who submits a product to the platform — uploading the images, the link, and tagging the makers behind it.
