Writers Studio
AI writing app that reads your novel and catches plot holes
Writers Studio is a native Mac fiction writing app with manuscript editing, AI-assisted worldbuilding, continuity checks, local Ollama support, and export to ePUB, PDF, DOCX, Final Draft, Markdown, RTF, HTML, and plain text.
Hey Product Hunt,
I'm Joshua, the solo developer behind Writers Studio. I've been building it for about 18 months because I wanted a fiction writing app where the manuscript, story bible, continuity checks, export, and AI assistant all live in the same native Mac workflow.
The core idea is simple: what if your writing app actually understood your story?
Most AI writing tools feel like a chat box bolted onto a document editor. Writers Studio is different. It reads your manuscript context and helps you turn the draft into useful structured story data:
- Extract characters, locations, timeline events, relationships, and worldbuilding entries from your prose
- Check continuity across chapters, including contradictions, timeline drift, and details that change by accident
- Keep an AI assistant beside the manuscript instead of forcing you to paste context into a generic chat tab
- Export to ePUB, PDF, DOCX, Final Draft, Markdown, RTF, HTML, and plain text
Privacy and ownership were big design constraints. The Direct edition lets writers use their own OpenAI, Anthropic, or Gemini keys, or run local AI with Ollama. The Mac App Store edition is live as a free download with optional AI subscriptions for people who prefer App Store billing and no API-key setup.
Built natively with SwiftUI and SwiftData. No Electron, no web wrapper.
I'd love feedback from fiction writers, Mac users, and anyone building creative tools. The question I'm most curious about: what continuity or story-management problem would you want a writing app to catch before beta readers do?

Who hunted Writers Studio?
Writers Studio was hunted by Joshua Cavell. A “hunter” on Product Hunt is the community member who submits a product to the platform — uploading the images, the link, and tagging the makers behind it. Hunters typically write the first comment explaining why a product is worth attention, and their followers are notified the moment they post. Around 79% of featured launches on Product Hunt are self-hunted by their makers, but a well-known hunter still acts as a signal of quality to the rest of the community.
