Workout Writer: Run & Ride
Structured running and cycling workouts in seconds
Create structured running and cycling workouts from plain text, preview instantly, and send to Apple Watch or Garmin Connect in seconds.
Hi all. This app has been a labour of love for such a long time now. What started off as a "wouldn't it be great if this was possible" when I was thinking about how my run club friends would all use similar text to describe the track workout we'd all just done when entering it in Strava - why can't we use that text to create the workout in the first place?!
When Apple introduced WorkoutKit in WWDC 2023, I started playing with the idea, but wasn't happy with it because there was no way of adding custom labels to workout steps - so my Tempo interval would just be shown on the Apple Watch as a pace, rather than the name that I know it by. Apple fixed that in 2024 by allowing custom display names for workout steps. By late 2024 I had something that I felt could be a real product, but then I discovered the Garmin Training API, and how closely it actually mapped to Apple's workout structure. Supporting two of the main platforms that runners and cyclists use would make the app an altogether different proposition!
By the end of 2024, I had given access to some of my run club friends - an app that looked a lot like it does today. The sharing features really fell into place during that time, and they're now one of the most powerful benefits of this app.
As an ultra-runner and full-time software developer on apps that I love to work on, it doesn't leave much time for side-projects. Fortunately 😢 a long term injury last May has dramatically limited my running, so I've had more time in the evenings and weekends to finish this off!
I've got lots planned for this app over the coming months - fingers crossed for a WWDC2026 of expanding of Apple's App Intents, because this should allow powerful AI integrations for those of you who like to choose their own LLM for programming their workout schedule.
If you've got this far, then:
a) thanks for bearing with me, and
b) I really hope the you find this useful and interesting, and can't wait to hear what you think!
