Wind phones are places where people speak to loved ones they miss. The first was a disconnected rotary phone in a Japanese garden; 30,000 have made that trip to say what was left unspoken. Most can't get there. This one is on your phone. Pick up, say their name, speak. The wind listens, and carries the words to the other side. I built this for my mom, Dhana. After she died I kept reaching for my phone to
call her. That reflex takes a long time to unlearn.
In 2010 a garden designer in Otsuchi, Japan put an old rotary telephone in a
glass booth on a hill, connected to nothing. He'd lost his cousin and needed
somewhere to keep talking to him. Months later the tsunami took around 1,400
people from that town and he opened the garden to anyone. Over 30,000 have
picked up that receiver since. Kaze no denwa, the wind phone: you say what was
left unspoken and the wind carries it to the other side.
I couldn't get to a hillside in Japan. Most people can't. So I built the booth
into the thing already in my hand.
Pick up, say their name, talk. Nothing answers, and that was the hardest call in
the build, because every instinct in 2026 says put an AI on the other end. An AI
would be answering for someone who can't. The silence is the feature.
The rest was privacy, because grief is the most private thing a person carries.
No transcription, no recording, no storage, no account, no cookies, no network
requests during a call. It reacts only to the shape of your voice: pace, pauses,
energy, never the words. An e2e test fails if a single request leaves the device
mid-call.
