Whereabouts

A private link that always shows where you are

Whereabouts logs which state and country you’re in every day on your iPhone, in the background. You get day counts for each state, a timeline of every vacation, a map of your travels, a border alert every time you cross a new state or country line, and a CSV to send to your accountant. A free public link: a private URL that shows where you are as JSON, text, or an SVG badge. You choose your precision. You don’t need an account. Add it to your AI assistant so it stops asking where you are.

I usually split my time between a few states, and at tax season my accountant always asks, “How many days were you in X?” It was really hard to use credit card statements and photos to piece the picture back together, so I just built an app that records it every day in the background.

Later, I added the public link because people kept asking where I was, and I wanted a website I could put up that just had the answer. I now have it in the footer of my personal website, along with the time in that place. That way, my assistant can always know my time zone.

The hardest part about building this was background location on iOS, so it doesn’t drain the battery and get killed. I can explain that more. I would love feedback on what precision you’d actually feel comfortable publishing at and what else you would want the link to return. I will be active here.
