Whatsit

Snip your screen and ask Claude about it

Whatsit is a tiny Windows tray app for Claude CLI users. Press Ctrl+Shift+C, drag a box around anything on screen, and ask Claude about it — the answer pops up in a compact popup right at your cursor, rendered as markdown. It shells out to the Claude CLI you already have logged in, so there are no API keys or extra setup. Built with Tauri + Rust (~9 MB, no Electron), with an in-tray auto-updater. Free & open source (MIT).

Top comment

Hey Product Hunt 👋 I'm a heavy Claude Code / Claude CLI user, and I kept doing the same dance: screenshot something, find the file, paste it into Claude, type "what is this." So I made it one keypress. Whatsit sits in your tray. Hit Ctrl+Shift+C, snip any part of your screen, and a little popup opens at your cursor to ask Claude about it — a bug, an error, a chart, a UI, whatever. The answer streams back as markdown, right there. A few things I cared about: • It uses the Claude CLI you already have logged in — no API keys, no accounts, nothing new to set up. • It's tiny and native: Tauri + Rust, ~9 MB, no Electron. • You can drop a snip into an existing Claude session for context. • Signed in-tray auto-updates, MIT licensed. Honest heads-up: it's Windows-only for now and requires the Claude CLI, so it's really for people already in that ecosystem. It's free and open source — I'd love feedback, issues, and ideas: https://github.com/Khaled-BH/wha... Not affiliated with Anthropic — just a tool built for fellow Claude users. 🙌

Who hunted Whatsit?

Whatsit was hunted by Khaled Khalifa. A “hunter” on Product Hunt is the community member who submits a product to the platform — uploading the images, the link, and tagging the makers behind it. Hunters typically write the first comment explaining why a product is worth attention, and their followers are notified the moment they post. Around 79% of featured launches on Product Hunt are self-hunted by their makers, but a well-known hunter still acts as a signal of quality to the rest of the community.
