What You Inherit

Genetic risk from your family tree — no DNA test needed

What You Inherit infers latent genotypes and genetic-disease risk from a pedigree — no genetic test required. Enter a family tree plus whatever clinical detail exists, and get exact Bayesian posteriors over which disease is segregating, each relative's carrier probability and lifetime risk, and the variant they likely carry.

Hey Product Hunt 👋 We're launching whatyouinherit — a tool that works out what a family likely inherited genetically, using only the family tree and whatever clinical detail already exists. No DNA test required. The problem it solves: most tools either rank diseases by symptom similarity then apply a textbook risk figure, or assume you already have genetic data. Both throw away the strongest signal in a family — how the phenotype actually segregates through the pedigree. What's different: A joint Bayesian model over disease identity, latent genotypes and observed phenotypes — exact inference (variable elimination / junction tree), not sampling or a phenotype-similarity score Age-dependent penetrance and onset learned from the family's own ages, so an unaffected 70-year-old counts as evidence against a dominant allele — an unaffected 20-year-old doesn't Handles consanguinity, imprinting (14 disorders), digenic inheritance, germline mosaicism, hereditary cancer (BRCAPRO-style model), common multifactorial conditions, and "two conditions at once" Negative test results are weighted by what the assay can miss — a negative HTT test leaves 0.99% risk if targeted, 9.1% if a panel, never a false 0% It ships with a CLI, a Python API, and a browser pedigree builder where you can describe your family in plain language (Chinese or English) and it fills the tree in — with every ID validated against the compiled database before the numbers are run. Validated, with baselines: beats "Mendelian, given the true diagnosis" on calibration by ~3x (ECE 0.085 vs 0.198), and reproduces textbook genetic-counselling hand calculations — the mother of an isolated Duchenne boy carries it 2/3 of the time, exactly as Haldane's argument says. Full source (MIT) + 10k+ lines of validation in the repo. Would love feedback from anyone working in genomics, clinical genetics, or family-history tooling. What would you want to see next?

Who hunted What You Inherit?

What You Inherit was hunted by Hao. A “hunter” on Product Hunt is the community member who submits a product to the platform — uploading the images, the link, and tagging the makers behind it.
