WattMate
Which app is draining your Mac, in watts and minutes saved
WattMate sits in the Mac menu bar and shows which app is draining the battery right now, in watts, and how many minutes you get back if you quit it. 2 minutes after you quit, it measures again and prints what really changed. Apple silicon, macOS 14+.
I'm the guy who forgets to charge overnight, walks into a coffee shop with a half-empty Mac and then sits there not knowing what is draining it or whether closing anything would help. Activity Monitor has an Energy Impact column, but it's a score with no unit: you can rank apps with it, you can't turn it into time.
So I wrote an app whose main screen has one rule: only what's changing right now and what you can act on. That became 2 numbers per app, the watts it's drawing and the minutes you get back if you quit it. And because any tool can print a number, 2 minutes after you quit it measures the Mac again and prints what actually changed. The screenshot says "promised 24 min, got 28", and when the load moved for other reasons it says that instead.
I also assumed sleep was free. Most nights my Mac loses about 5% with the lid closed, then one night it loses 38%, and nothing on the Mac says why. So WattMate logs who woke it and for how long: about an hour awake on the bad night, 12 minutes on a normal one.
Pricing:
- Fully unlocked 10-day trial, no card
- Still free after the trial: the app list, the watts, battery health, and the most recent run and night
- The minutes and the archive are the paid part
- Lifetime: $19 instead of $29, the launch price for the first 100 keys, applied at checkout without a code
- Yearly: $9.99
- One key works on 2 Macs
Apple silicon, macOS 14 or later. The names of your apps, your watt figures and your energy history never leave the Mac. Ask me anything about how the measuring works, that's the part I like talking about.
