Every budgeting app I tried wanted me to plan ahead — set a budget, pick a category, reconcile income. I never kept it up, and the guilt of having spent the money never went anywhere. So I built the opposite. WasteLvl only records money that is already gone. No budgets, no income, no categories to agonise over. You pick one of three "experiences" — Growth, Reward, Bond — type the amount and what it was, and you're done. Four fields. The twist: what you wasted becomes XP. Your level goes up and a pixel adventurer grows with it, gaining a weapon, a shield, companions. The biggest change during development was the level curve. In the first build, spending a month's worth of coffee moved you from Lv 5 to Lv 6 and nothing felt like it happened. I recut it as the square root of what you spend, so a single record can jump you several levels early on. Levelling up is the whole reward of this app, so it needed to happen often. Everything is hand-drawn pixel art, and every sound is a square wave synthesised on the fly — no audio files, like an 8-bit console. 35 currencies, 47 languages, records never leave your device.
