WallpaperMachine
Wallpaper Engine wallpapers, now on macOS
Wallpaper Engine, on your Mac. Browse the Steam Workshop's 3 million wallpapers in the app and apply one in a click, plus pixiv's 177 million artworks. These aren't just videos: scene and web wallpapers react to your mouse and your music. Most wallpapers just work, and a broken one is a click away from a GitHub report. Built to sip battery: wallpapers pause when covered or locked, and each one shows its power use. Free, open source, no tracking.
Hi Product Hunt 👋
I've used Wallpaper Engine on Windows for years. When I moved to a Mac, I looked everywhere for an alternative and never found one that came close. Wallpaper Engine's own FAQ says a Mac version isn't coming anytime soon (https://help.wallpaperengine.io/...), so I built one myself: WallpaperMachine, which brings Wallpaper Engine's wallpapers to macOS.
🖼 It works like Wallpaper Engine
Browse the Steam Workshop right in the app, with over 3 million wallpapers. Download one and it's on your desktop in a click. I also built in pixiv, so its 177 million artworks are a click away from becoming your wallpaper too.
✨ They're alive, not just videos
Many Workshop wallpapers are scenes or web pages. They follow your mouse, move with the music your Mac is playing, and some even show the song that's on. You can change every option the artist built in.
🔋 Easy on your battery
A covered display pauses its wallpaper, and lock and sleep pause them all. On battery you can lower the frame rate or pause entirely. Settings shows exactly how much power each wallpaper uses: a scene I measured on an M5 Pro drew about 0.6 W.
💚 Free and open source
The whole app, renderer included, is on GitHub under GPL-2.0. There's no paid tier and no analytics. It builds on two open-source projects, wallpaper-engine-for-macos and Open Wallpaper Engine, and I've shipped 28 releases since mid-September.
Most wallpapers just work, but not all of them yet. If one looks wrong, click "Not working? Report on GitHub" in its details. It opens a prefilled issue, and those reports are how compatibility keeps improving.
Good to know:
- Needs an Apple silicon Mac on macOS 15 or later
- Workshop downloads and scene wallpapers need a Steam account that owns Wallpaper Engine. Videos, your own pictures and pixiv work without it
- Not notarized yet, so macOS asks you to click "Open Anyway" once
- Not affiliated with Wallpaper Engine or Valve
What's the first wallpaper you'd put on your Mac?
