VocReel

Train your ears with real English, one sentence at a time.

VocReel is an English listening practice app for learners who can read English but struggle to understand it when spoken naturally. Listen to one sentence without subtitles, try to understand it, reveal the text, then replay it and connect the sounds to words you already know. Practice through short, swipeable content across listening, speaking, vocabulary, and more.

Hey Product Hunt! 👋 I’m a solo developer, and I’ve spent the last three months building VocReel. It started with a problem I kept running into while learning English: I could read a sentence and understand every word, but when I heard the exact same sentence spoken naturally, sometimes I couldn’t understand it at all. That gap between “I know these words” and “I can actually hear these words” is what I wanted to work on. So I built VocReel around a simple loop: listen to a sentence without subtitles, try to understand it, reveal the text, then listen again. Instead of sitting through a full lesson, you can keep moving through short pieces of English one at a time. What started as a small experiment grew quite a bit. I ended up building the web app, iOS and Android apps, a backend, a content system, listening and speaking practice, review flows, and a large library of sentence-level content. Now I’m at the part that’s much harder than building it: finding out whether people actually want to use it. 😅 So I’m launching VocReel here pretty early. I’d especially love to hear from people who have experienced the same thing — you can read English, but listening feels like a completely different language. I’d love your feedback on one thing in particular: After trying VocReel, would you actually want to come back tomorrow and practice again? Thanks for checking it out!
