VitaCal
Photo your meal, get calories. 5 free AI scans a week.
Most AI calorie trackers paywall photo scanning entirely. VitaCal gives you 5 AI photo scans a week free, plus unlimited manual logging. Photograph a meal, get calories and macros as an editable estimate. It reads sleep, HRV, workouts, weight and cycle from Apple Health or Health Connect, and writes nutrition back. There's an AI coach grounded in your own data, and an MCP endpoint so you can query it from Claude. Meal photos are analysed then deleted immediately. Never stored.
I built this because every AI calorie app I tried paywalled the one feature that makes them useful, then quoted accuracy numbers nobody could verify.
So two decisions. The AI photo scanning is on the free tier, 5 scans a week, no card. And I publish no accuracy figure, because no calorie app has a peer-reviewed validation of its shipping product, mine included. Estimates are decent on separated foods and noticeably worse on curries and stews, which matches the published research. Everything is editable after the estimate.
The part I most enjoyed building: it reads sleep, HRV, workouts, weight and cycle from Apple Health or Health Connect rather than only writing calories out, and there is an MCP endpoint so you can query your own health data from Claude.
Happy to answer anything, including what it does badly.
