VIGIL
The anti-breaking news app.
Modern news turns not-knowing into content, trading in manufactured panic and "could." VIGIL is conceptual art built to critique that system using its own tools. It monitors one undisclosed event at the center of global discourse and inverts breaking alerts notifying you that nothing has changed until it definitively does. One binary answer: yes or no. No feeds, tracking, or speculation. A sterile headline Rorschach test: you decide what it means.

As an artist, I believe there are things people across the world are already anticipating: war, elections, death, the handful of events that sit under all the noise. That's where the single-event idea came from. But it expands depending on who's looking at it, what they believe, what they're bracing for, which is where the Rorschach test part comes in. VIGIL takes the shape of a modern headline and strips away the subject, leaving only the structure: something happened, or it didn't. What fills that gap is yours. That shift changed how I built everything. I got strict about vocabulary: VIGIL "observes," it never "monitors" or "watches," because those words imply judgment, and the whole point is that it offers none. I also built a parody of a modern news homepage, fake pundits, fake tickers, fake urgency, to show the exact thing VIGIL refuses to do, rather than just describe it. By the end, the hardest part wasn't the code. It was making sure every word stayed as restrained as the concept demanded.

Who hunted VIGIL?
VIGIL was hunted by textbooknarcissism. A “hunter” on Product Hunt is the community member who submits a product to the platform — uploading the images, the link, and tagging the makers behind it. Hunters typically write the first comment explaining why a product is worth attention, and their followers are notified the moment they post. Around 79% of featured launches on Product Hunt are self-hunted by their makers, but a well-known hunter still acts as a signal of quality to the rest of the community.
