VDM Basketball Coach
Draw a basketball play, watch it run in 3D
Built by a basketball coach. Draw plays, watch them run in 3D, tag film, cut clips by player, print scouting reports and practice plans. Works with the AI you already use: it writes the request, your AI fills it in. Mac & Windows, offline, 12 languages.
I'm Vince, a basketball coach — assistant with the Italian women's national team. At the World Cup in Berlin I was the one preparing the opponents: USA, China, Czechia, Australia.
For years my week looked like this: game film in one program, plays drawn in another, scouting reports in Word, practice plans on paper. Four tools, nothing connected. So I built the one app I wanted.
🎥 Tag the game as you watch it — every tag becomes a clip, by player
📋 Draw a play the way you always do, then watch it run: in 2D for the board and in 3D for your players, in the right order — the screen, then the player using it, then the pass
📄 Scouting reports, personnel sheets and practice plans, print-ready
💻 Mac & Windows, offline, 12 languages
And the part I'd most like your opinion on: it works with AI, but not the way you'd expect.
The program has no AI inside it and no API key. Preparing an opponent means hunting down a roster, jersey numbers, photos, statistics and play types across four websites — an evening's work, every week. So instead of embedding a model and charging you for it, the app writes the request and you paste it into the AI you already pay for. Your AI does the searching and saves one file; the app watches a folder, picks it up, and fills in rosters, photos, statistics and play types by itself. Whatever it couldn't find, you type in by hand.
No subscription, no vendor lock-in, nothing of yours leaving your computer, and no second AI bill. It also means the app doesn't get worse when someone else's model changes.
Two things that happened this week. The Italian professional basketball coaches' union (USAP, around 500 members) put the program under an agreement for its members — the first time anyone other than me has vouched for it. And I finally wrote down what I actually believe, on one page: vdmdata.it/one-coach — two ways to draw the same play, one of which has been arrows on paper for a hundred years.
One-time licence, 14-day trial, no sign-up.
I'd love your feedback — especially from coaches: what would make the 3D playbook more useful for your team? And from everyone else: does that way of using AI make sense to you, or would you rather it just did it for you? I'll be here all day.
