What led me to UrbanBids was noticing a fundamental gap in how construction and infrastructure work gets awarded. Large government projects are formally tendered, but a huge amount of smaller, retail-level work—maintenance, repairs, renovations, small construction and local services—is still sourced through informal networks and manual negotiations within a limited pool of known contractors. This creates a discovery problem on both sides: buyers don't have an efficient way to find the right local contractor, while contractors don't get visibility into nearby opportunities. UrbanBids started as an attempt to digitize this fragmented market. My approach evolved from simply listing tenders to creating a platform where requirements can be posted, matched with relevant contractors, and converted into actual bids/quotes—essentially bringing the efficiency of digital procurement to the long tail of smaller, retail requirements.

Who hunted UrbanBids?

UrbanBids was hunted by Abhishek Ranjan. A “hunter” on Product Hunt is the community member who submits a product to the platform — uploading the images, the link, and tagging the makers behind it. Hunters typically write the first comment explaining why a product is worth attention, and their followers are notified the moment they post. Around 79% of featured launches on Product Hunt are self-hunted by their makers, but a well-known hunter still acts as a signal of quality to the rest of the community.
