I built Understory because every dream app I tried treated each dream like an isolated event: log it, get a symbol lookup or an AI paragraph, done. That’s not really how Jungian work happens. The actual signal is in what keeps coming back: the same figure, the same unresolved shape, showing up across weeks in different disguises.
So Understory reads every entry against a set of Jungian archetypes and tracks which ones recur over a rolling 30/60/90-day window, instead of just tagging a single entry. There’s also a Talmudic interpretive lens and an “Other Dreamers” layer (Norse, Tibetan, Mesopotamian and more), since what a symbol means isn’t culturally universal and most tools quietly assume it is.
A few things I was deliberate about:
It’s explicitly non-diagnostic. It’s a reflective tool, not a clinical one, and the app says so directly.
Dream content isn’t monetized for ads.
There’s a 7-day “First Week” onboarding sequence that eases you in rather than dumping every feature on day one.
I’d love feedback, especially from anyone who’s tried journaling their dreams before and given up. What made you stop?
