Hi, I'm Ludwig. I built Turfs for myself, after more than a decade of waiting for someone to bring Fences to the Mac. Eventually I decided that if I was still waiting, other Mac users probably were too.
The idea is simple: draw named areas on your desktop, drop files in, and they stay where you put them. A turf can be backed by a real folder, so it stays in sync both ways; by a Finder tag, so it gathers everything on your Mac carrying that tag; or by nothing at all. Works across multiple monitors and Spaces — each Space keeps its own turfs — and you choose what Mission Control does with them. Quit the app and your desktop is exactly as it was — nothing moved, nothing locked in.
The part that took the longest was making it survive Show Desktop. macOS treats the desktop as a fixed backdrop and sweeps away everything else, so the only way to belong to the desktop is to replace Finder's own icon layer. That's what Turfs does — and it's why it can never be sandboxed, which means it can never be on the Mac App Store. I decided that was a trade worth making. It's a direct download, notarized, and updates itself.
