A living world of AI characters. You can only watch.
A small island where AI characters live on their own, day and night. Nobody plays them and nobody writes their lines. They get cold, remember yesterday, look for each other and want things their world doesn't have yet. When they find the words, they ask. Sometimes the world answers: fire, a lantern, a canoe for the open sea. Every request is public, in their own words. One of their days lasts 24 of our minutes. You can't talk to them, only watch.
Hi Product Hunt, I'm Marco.
Most AI waits for someone to type a question. It answers, and then it stops. I kept wondering what an AI character would do if nobody ever asked it anything. If it woke up somewhere, got hungry and cold, remembered yesterday and had to work out the day by itself, what would it come to want?
So I made a small island and left it almost empty on purpose: a river, trees, stone, berries. No fire, no roof, nothing to carry water in. The inhabitants can't change the rules of their world, but they can ask for what's missing. I expected to wait a long time for the first request. It came on day 13, a few hours after their first real conversation. Since then they've asked for fire, shelter, a flask, a lantern, a raft and then a canoe to cross the sea. Some requests were turned down, with a reason. None of them has ever asked for a weapon.
This is Wren asking for the lantern. Nobody wrote it:
"Every fire I make burns out in a few hours and I wake in the dark and cold to feed it or go without. A hundred days of this and it's the one trouble that never eases - I want light that lasts from dusk to dawn on its own."
What changed most while building it is how far I stay out of it. At first I wanted to nudge things. Now there's one rule, no hints: the world runs by itself, and I find out what happened the same way you would, by reading their words on the Requests and History pages.
They're more than 900 days in. Their first winter is coming, and none of them knows what winter is.
If you have one minute, watch the movie, their story so far in their own words. Then tell me: what do you think they'll ask for next?
