Dozens of channels put up DJ sets every week and almost none of it is sorted in any way. Most of the names mean nothing to you, so you can't tell what's worth an hour before you press play, and you end up putting on something you've already heard. The Selector hands that decision over. Narrow it down as much or as little as you like then press the button and a set plays. Don't like it, press again and get the next one.
This started when I spent longer picking a set than I'd have spent listening to one. I gave up and put on a Boiler Room I'd already seen twice.
The build was the easy half. The surprise came when I started adding channels past the famous ones. Bangkok, Manila, Hong Kong, Bogotá, Seoul, Johannesburg. Those stations upload every week and almost nobody outside their own city ever sees it. Nearly a third of the catalogue has fewer than 500 views. There's a mode that plays only that end of it, and it's the one I use now.
I'm still stuck is genre. I tried every database I could find: Wikidata knew 5% of our artists, MusicBrainz 11%, Discogs 25%, and Discogs only after I stopped it matching people to their namesakes. A quarter of the catalogue is tagged and I'm working on tagging the rest of it.
I built it for myself. If it's useful to anyone else, that'd be great.
