The Indie Retail Playbook
The honest playbook for getting food/drink into stores
The exact method + email templates a one-person beverage brand used to land 4 independent-retail accounts (3 built in person, 1 from cold outreach that now reorders from 400 miles away) — no distributor, no broker, no ad budget. If you make a food or drink product and are stuck getting it onto real store shelves, this is the actual playbook we ran, not theory.
Maker here. I run a one-person beverage brand — a shelf-stable mango-flavored
microgreens drink (Sweet Mango Splash) out of the Shenandoah Valley, VA. One
product, no distributor, no broker, no sales team, no ad budget. Just me.
The hardest part of going solo isn’t making the product — it’s getting it onto
shelves: finding the right stores, digging up a real buyer’s email instead of the
generic info@ that bounces, writing a pitch that isn’t a template, and actually
following up. I wrote down the whole method I use, step by step, plus the real
email templates (first touch, day-3 value-add, close, reorder nudge).
The honest state, not the highlight reel: we’re in 4 independent stores, several
reordering. Three of those are local relationships I already had or built in
person — I won’t credit any software for doors I closed by showing up. The fourth
is a co-op about 400 miles away I’ve never visited: a cold email + call reached
them, an employee forwarded it internally to the buyer, she ordered a sample, and
she’s reordered on her own since — all by email and card, no handshake. That one
distant cold-touch-to-reorder is the result that convinced me the method is worth
writing down.
So the guide is the four-part method that got us here: find the right doors for
free (OpenStreetMap, no paid list), reach a real human and verify the email before
you send, say the right thing (the templates), and follow up without being
annoying. It’s $19 if it’s useful — link above. The door-finder is free if you
just want fresh stores to pitch.
Happy to answer anything about the build, the email-verification step, the sourcing,
or where it still breaks.
