The Daily Compile
The front page of tech, minus the clutter
Hacker News is dense and hard to scan, with a wall of links and little hierarchy. The Daily Compile turns tech news into a real newspaper, with a lead story, sections for AI, Security, Dev Tools, Startups, Show HN and Ask HN, plus a briefs sidebar. It combines HN, Reddit, Lobsters, dev.to, GitHub Trending, and major tech RSS feeds, automatically deduplicates cross-posts, and works as an installable, offline-style app.
I built this because I read Hacker News every morning but hated the interface — a flat list of 30 blue links with no hierarchy, no sections, nothing to help you decide what's worth 30 seconds vs. 5 minutes. So I asked: what if it looked like the thing newspapers spent a century perfecting? A front page with a lead story, desks for different beats, and briefs for the small stuff. The fun part was the classification — every story gets sorted into a desk by its title, so AI news lands on the AI Desk, breaches land on Security, and everything else goes to the Wire. I also merged in Reddit, Lobsters, dev.to, GitHub trending, and a few RSS feeds, with deduplication so the same story from three sources appears once. It's a PWA, so it lives on my phone's home screen like a native app. Would love feedback — especially on the desk keywords, which are very much a living list.
