Hi Product Hunt 👋 I'm Syafiudin, the maker of Thawdrop.
I built Thawdrop because sending a big file to someone shouldn't mean uploading it to a third party's server first, waiting for it to finish, and hitting a size limit along the way. [Replace with your own story: what happened that made you build it?]
How it works:
• Pick a file or folder in the desktop app (or right-click it), and you get a link and a QR code.
• The link is a magnet link. Your file never leaves your computer until someone opens the link.
• The receiver just opens it in any browser, no install and no account. They see the file list and download only the files they pick.
• The transfer goes straight from your device to theirs over WebRTC.
A few things you can turn on: a password (files are encrypted before sharing), an expiry time, and a download limit.
Being upfront about the trade-offs:
• Because there's no server holding the file, you need to keep Thawdrop running until the download finishes.
• The desktop app is available for macOS (Apple Silicon) and Windows. The Windows installer isn't code-signed yet, so SmartScreen may show a warning.
• Very strict networks can block direct connections.
