Most "agent on your phone" tools give you a terminal in your pocket. I didn't want that. I wanted a light switch, the agent asks, the switch is on my lock screen, I flip it, I go back to my coffee. Nothing to read, nothing to monitor, no terminal to babysit.
I've actually been using tapproval for about a month now. I never really planned to launch it - I just kept using it because it solved this tiny annoyance for me. Eventually I figured, why not put it out there for free and see if anyone else finds it useful.
So tapproval does exactly one thing. Claude Code hits a permission prompt, your phone buzzes, you tap allow or deny. `npx tapproval setup` and a QR scan is the whole install, no account, no API key, no tunnel.
The design constraint I refused to bend: I don't want to be able to see your commands. So I can't. They're encrypted on your machine with a key my server never holds; the push itself just says "Approve Bash?" and your phone decrypts the rest.
Second constraint: being broken should look like nothing happening. Server down, push dead, you asleep, it falls through to the terminal prompt you'd have gotten anyway. There is no setting that makes this tap yes for you.
And because a switch that buzzes while you're at your desk is just an annoying switch, there's a grace period: answer in the terminal first and no notification is ever created.
Where it's still small: Claude Code only (Codex needs a ~200-line adapter and a subscription I don't have - PRs welcome), and iPhone can't do notification buttons because WebKit still ignores them, so iOS is tap through to PWA while Android gets one tap on the lock screen.
Free, MIT, self hostable, nothing to upgrade to. I'm not building a dashboard on top of it.
