SyncMouth β helps you practice English pronunciation by focusing not only on sound, but on how your mouth moves. Using your iPhone's camera and microphone, practice English sounds one by one while paying attention to your mouth, and take on game-like challenges with a variety of words. Instead of just "listen and repeat," you practice how to move your mouth to get closer to native (American English) pronunciation. Free to download and play, with optional in-app purchases.

Why we built it
I studied English for six years in school. I could read it, I could write a simple sentence, and I quietly assumed I was fine. Then I walked into a conversation class and couldn't say anything. The words were in my head and they would not come out of my mouth.
What saved me wasn't grammar. A teacher showed me the mouth shape for a single sound and asked me to copy it. I tried, and something clicked — "wait, that actually sounded English." I hadn't learned a new word. I hadn't learned a new rule. I had just moved my mouth differently, and the sound changed.
That was the moment. Getting the mouth right is what made the sound right. And unlike fluency, which takes years, I could feel myself getting a little better than yesterday. That feedback loop was addictive enough to keep me studying.
I tried to turn that into an app about five years ago and couldn't — no engineering background, and the quotes from dev shops were two orders of magnitude past my savings. I gave up on it. Then generative AI got good enough that I could build it. A year and a half later, here's the beta.
What's different
Most pronunciation apps only listen. They tell you the sound was wrong, which you already suspected, and then leave you to guess what to do about it. That gap is exactly where I got stuck for years.
SyncMouth watches how you move your mouth, not just what comes out of it. Your iPhone camera sees your mouth shape and movement while the mic hears the sound, and the app judges both together — so the feedback is about what to change, not just that something was off. Then you take it into word challenges built to feel like a game rather than a drill. American English, one sound at a time.
Free to download and play, with optional in-app purchases — we didn't want a paywall sitting in the middle of the core loop.
