Hey Product Hunt 👋
I'm Prabhakar, a product designer from India. Swatantrata is a side project I've been building for the last two weeks.
Most countries remember their independence through about twenty names. India is no different; the same faces on the same posters. But the movement ran for ninety years and involved millions of people, and only a handful of them made it into the textbook.
Swatantrata puts one of them on your new tab.
Every time you open a tab, you meet one forgotten figure — a tribal leader who resisted British land seizures, a teenage girl who carried the flag until she was shot, a poet who kept writing verse on his way to the gallows. Their story, their sacrifice, and, where possible, their own words, on a card designed to look like something you'd pull out of an archive rather than a webpage.
What it does
→ Replaces your new tab with a full-screen historical card
→ 50 figures and incidents so far, more to follow soon
→ A Next button, if you want another one instead of waiting for the next tab
On permissions: Does not track or collect your data. Just history.
Why I built it: as I started reading on my own, I figured that so many people and incidents that shaped the Indian freedom struggle and contributed equally, if not more, are hardly remembered today.
It's free and always will be.
