Street Peekaboo started as a side gig of my start-up. I co-founded footpath.ai, where we use AI and computer vision to map the world's sidewalks from street-level imagery. After spending all day inside that imagery, I kept noticing how fast we read a place. Within a couple of seconds you've decided whether a street feels safe, walkable, lively, or dull. Our visual system evolved to search cluttered scenes for what matters, so I built a tiny version of that. A real 360° street somewhere in the world, ten seconds to find one hidden thing. A camouflaged kookaburra, a bird shows up plausibly on almost any Australian street, and it was one of the Sydney 2000 Olympic mascots, so it felt like a distinctive, slightly mischievous Aussie icon. While you hunt for it, you can't help noticing the architecture, the signs, the life of a place you may never visit. It's free, no sign-in, a new city every day, with a Wordle-style score to share. It began just because we thought it'd be fun. Though I'm quietly curious whether a game like this could eventually reveal something about how people perceive cities.
