Stoic — HDR video player for Mac
The Mac video player that gets HDR and Dolby Vision right
Most Mac players guess at colour: they ignore a file's colour tags, flatten HDR highlights and show Dolby Vision with a green or purple cast. Stoic reads what the file says, maps HDR to the headroom of the screen it's on, and tells you when a file is missing what it needs. Plays MKV, HEVC, AV1, Dolby Vision, HDR10+, HLG and 248 file types. Private folders, A–B loop, dual subtitles, on-device transcription. One-time purchase, 3 Macs.
Hey Product Hunt 👋 I'm Neil, and I built Stoic because I kept watching films on a great Mac display with the wrong colours.
Most players quietly guess: they ignore a file's colour tags, squash HDR highlights, or play Dolby Vision Profile 5 with a green-and-purple cast. Stoic reads what the file actually says, maps HDR to the headroom of the display it's on (and re-checks when you drag the window to another screen), and tells you plainly when a file is missing information instead of hiding a guess.
It's also light: on a 4K Dolby Vision file it used 56× less CPU than VLC on my M1 Pro (full test setup on stoicplayer.com/benchmarks).
Beyond the picture: dual subtitles, on-device transcription you can search, A–B loops and saved moments for reviewing a shot, private folders behind Touch ID, and a library that never uploads anything.
It's a one-time purchase (no subscription) that works on 3 Macs. I'd love your feedback, especially on files that don't look right. That's exactly what I want to fix next.
