Startr

Start the thing you keep putting off, in two minutes

Startr is a procrastination app for the one task you keep putting off. It writes a first step that takes two minutes, asks when and where you'll do it, then counts you down 3, 2, 1 and runs a 5-minute timer. On iPhone, Apple Watch and the web.

Hi everyone, I'm Maher, and I made Startr. Most apps for procrastination are to-do lists, timers or site blockers. They help once you've started, but the task I was avoiding never got started at all. So Startr only works on one thing at a time, the one you've been putting off longest, and it focuses on the first few minutes. You type the thing, and Startr writes a first step that takes about two minutes, such as "Open the chapter file and write one rough sentence." You pick a time and a place. At that time it counts you down 3, 2, 1 and runs a 5-minute timer, and when the timer ends you can stop or keep going. At night it asks whether you started and what got in the way, then writes tomorrow's step. A few details: - It tracks your start delay, the minutes between when you planned to start and when you did, so you can watch it get shorter. - Missing a day leaves a gap. Your count never goes back to zero. - There's an "I'm avoiding it" button for the moment you're stuck. It asks where you're stuck and gives you something to try that takes about a minute. - The iPhone app has home screen widgets and runs the timer on Apple Watch. The web app works on any phone or computer, and the Android app is on the way. - No sign-up: the app makes an anonymous account the first time you open it. There's also a free tool on the website that breaks any task into parts and writes the first step, no account needed: startr.si/first-step I'd love to hear where you get stuck with the things you put off, and what would make the first step easier.
