I started this in 2018 because I wanted one simple thing on stream: show the song that was actually playing. Spotify didn’t give streamers a clean way to do that, so I wrote a tiny Windows app that grabbed the current track and dumped it into a text file OBS could read. Custom output like {artist} - {title}, a few extra spaces so the overlay didn’t look chopped off. That was the whole product. The problem never really went away, it just got bigger. Streamers didn’t only want “now playing.” Viewers wanted to request songs in chat or with channel points. Nightbot-style setups were clunky, paid, or didn’t talk to Spotify properly. I kept adding what people actually asked for: a real request queue, blocklists, refunds, album art, hosted widgets, then YouTube Music, foobar, VLC, and whatever Windows is playing. That’s how Songify evolved. It was never a big launch plan. It was eight years of “can it also do this?” from streamers. The core stayed the same: free, open source, and the streamer stays in control of the queue.
