SmartCart — Voice Shopping List
SmartCart — Liste à la voix
Build your shopping list without putting anything down. SmartCart is a hands-free voice list for grocery, hardware, pharmacy and renovation. One tap on the mic, then dictate item after item — "add milk, bread and two kilos of flour." It sorts by aisle and learns the layout of your own stores. Say "check the bread" or "remove the butter" and it obeys. In store mode it reads back what's left. French and English, even mixed in one sentence. No account. No ads. No subscription.

everyone had already solved the hard part. Speech recognition on a modern phone is genuinely good. So why was I still typing? Because every list app I tried wanted me to unlock the screen, find the app, tap a field, type, and tap save — for each item. The voice was available; the design wasn't using it. So the first decision was to put the verb in front and make dictation the primary input, not a feature buried in a menu. You tap the mic once and then just keep talking. "Add milk, bread and two kilos of flour." It restarts listening on its own after each item, so you never touch the screen again. The second thing I discovered while using it is that the real friction isn't the input — it's the order. A list sorted alphabetically is useless in a store. So SmartCart sorts by aisle and learns the order you actually walk through each store. It starts with a sensible default and adjusts after a couple of trips. I added a small banner that says which state it's in, because a feature that's invisible while it's learning just looks broken. Three constraints shaped everything else. First, no server: the list lives on the phone, so there's nothing to sync and nothing to lose if I stop maintaining it. Second, no account — asking someone to sign up to organize their groceries is asking for something the app shouldn't need. Third, French and English together, because around here people say "achète du milk" in the same sentence and every app I tried forced you to pick one language and stay there. The honest part: it is not 100 % offline in the absolute sense. Dictation uses the phone's speech engine, and depending on the device and its settings, that engine may work locally or through the network. I tested in airplane mode before launching and it worked on my devices — but I can't guarantee it on every phone, so the store listing says "works without a connection" rather than promising an absolute. That distinction cost me some marketing punch and bought me credibility. The app is 1.6 MB. No embedded voice model, no analytics SDK, no ad library. That number is the best proof that it does only what it says.
