Signspell

Real-time ASL alphabet recognition in py ,pip install and go

Signspell is an open-source Python package that recognises the American Sign Language fingerspelling alphabet live from your webcam. It works as both a command-line tool and an importable library. Install it, run one command, and start signing letters that appear on screen.Built with MediaPipe hand tracking and an LSTM model, it runs smoothly on an ordinary laptop CPU, no GPU required. MIT licensed and built for developers, students, and educators curious about computer vision and accessibility.

Hi Product Hunt! I'm Sundar, an AI and computer vision engineer. signspell started as a question: could I make a computer understand sign language? It grew into a full open-source package. It recognises the ASL fingerspelling alphabet (A to Z) live from your webcam using MediaPipe and an LSTM model. I deliberately kept the scope tight for this first release: do live alphabet recognition really well, ship it with a polished UI, and make it installable with a single pip command. The hardest part wasn't the machine learning, it was the packaging and the dependency wrangling to make it install reliably for everyone. I've documented all of that openly. I'd love your feedback, and I'm especially curious what you'd build with a stream of recognised letters. Future versions will add data collection and training so you can teach it your own signs. Thanks for checking it out!
