There's a version of basketball development that most people never talk about. It happens in driveways. In empty gyms after school. On public courts with bent rims and no nets. It happens without a trainer, without film sessions, without anyone watching closely enough to tell you your elbow is flaring on every release. That version of the game is where most players live, where the hours of practice far outweigh the cumulative game time. And for a long time, it's where most players stalled — not because they weren't working, but because they were working without feedback. I built Shot Mimic because I kept seeing the same gap. The kids whose families could afford private trainers were getting better faster — not because they were more talented, not because they were putting in more hours, but because someone was watching them and telling them what to fix. The kids who couldn't afford that were grinding in silence, ingraining bad habits, wondering why the reps weren't translating. That's not a talent gap. That's an access gap. A private shooting coach runs $50–$150 an hour. For a family that's already stretching to cover AAU fees, travel, and gear, that's not a realistic line item. So those kids either go without, or they try to piece together YouTube videos and hope something clicks. I kept thinking: the feedback loop is the product. The training itself — the reps, the hours — those kids are already putting in. They just have no mirror. No one telling them their load is too low, or their follow-through drops before the ball lands, or their stance is setting them up to fade left on every shot. What if the phone they already have in their pocket could be that mirror? That was the idea behind Shot Mimic. Use the camera to watch every rep. Use AI to compare it against elite shooting mechanics, phase by phase. Surface the feedback in plain language, in real time, the way a good coach would — not buried in a report they have to decode, but delivered clearly, right after the shot. No cloud. No account. Nothing leaving the device. Just a player, a hoop, and a phone propped up on a water bottle — and a coach in their corner for every rep. The goal was never to replace great coaching. A great coach sees things the app can't — the mental side, the game-speed decisions, the relationship that makes a kid want to come back tomorrow. But for the players who don't have access to that coach, Shot Mimic is better than nothing. In a lot of cases, it's better than most of what's available. Basketball has always rewarded the players who find a way to get more reps with better feedback than everyone else. Shot Mimic exists to make sure that advantage isn't only available to the families who can write the check. Every player deserves a coach. This is my attempt to build one that fits in your pocket.
