ShadeType
One tap and nobody beside you can read your screen
ShadeType drops a translucent veil over your Android screen while you type, so the person next to you sees nothing - while your own words stay faintly readable. Works with any keyboard and reads nothing you type. Free, with a one-time Pro unlock.

Hi Product Hunt 👋 I built ShadeType after replying to a message on a packed train and realising the guy next to me had been reading it for a while. Every "solution" I found was a custom keyboard, which meant handing my typing over to an app I didn't trust. So ShadeType isn't a keyboard. It keeps yours. It watches for one thing only - whether a keyboard is on screen - and when one opens, a small control lands on it. Tap it and a veil drops over everything above the keyboard. The part I'm most pleased with: the veil isn't opaque. At the default opacity your own text stays faintly readable from straight on, while it's unreadable from the side. If you need to check something underneath, hold anywhere on the veil to peek and it closes again when you let go. What it does not do: it never reads what you type. The accessibility service reports keyboard visibility and nothing else - no keystrokes, no text, no clipboard. Nothing you type leaves your phone, there are no ads, and there's no subscription. Free forever: the veil itself, the veil colours, where the control starts, and a keyboard offset slider (Gboard's toolbar sits inside the keyboard window, so this lets you carve out that row). One-time Pro unlock: veil opacity, your own photo as the veil, covering the whole screen with no keyboard open (for banking apps), per-app auto veil, Quick Settings tiles, and arming again after a restart. There's a 10-minute try button so you can feel all of it before deciding. Two things in this build came from users who wrote to me this week: the whole-screen veil and that keyboard offset slider. So if it doesn't fit how you use your phone, tell me here - that's genuinely how it gets better. I have a handful of Pro codes. Comment about how you'd use it and I'll send you one.
