Hi Product Hunt! I built Setsumei because of a problem I kept running into while learning Japanese: understanding what a sentence means doesn’t necessarily mean understanding why it works. Translation tools are great at giving me the meaning, but I often wanted to take a sentence I’d actually encountered and understand the grammar inside it — what each pattern contributes, how it’s formed, and what nuance it adds. That’s what Setsumei is for. You can paste a Japanese sentence, explore the grammar it contains, and save useful grammar points together with the original sentence. Later, you can review them in the same context instead of studying them only as isolated grammar rules. I also wanted Setsumei to feel like a simple native app rather than another online service. Analysis runs on device, there’s no account, advertising, analytics, or tracking, and Premium is a one-time purchase rather than a subscription. This is the first public release, so I’d especially love feedback from other Japanese learners: does learning grammar from sentences you actually encounter work for you, and what would make Setsumei more useful?
